Jian Jiang

Ocean Science Consulting

JIANDr Jian Jiang (James) has been working as a part-time Acoustician for Ocean Science Consulting Ltd (OSC) since 2011. During this time, he has been involved in underwater sound propagation modeling (ray tracing based), field measurements (offshore in North Sea) and data analysis, using advanced signal processing technologies.

Dr Jiang has a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Fluid Mechanics from Tsinghua University in China, an Masters of Science (M.Sc.) in Acoustics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a Ph.D in Acoustic Condition Monitoring from the University of Manchester. Following the completion of his Ph.D, Dr Jiang worked as a research scientist at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), University of Southampton, UK. Dr Jiang is currently a Lecturer of Acoustics at Solent University, in the UK.

Dr Jiang’s research experience is broad and includes underwater acoustics, bubble physics, duct acoustics, railway structure vibration, airborne acoustics and aircraft noise, and acoustic condition monitoring. He has published over 32 papers since 2004. Dr Jiang first developed an interest in underwater acoustics whilst working with Prof. Tim Leighton and Prof. Paul White at the ISVR. Whilst working on the ‘Bubble detection in liquid-filled pipeline’ project, sponsored by the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC) Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL, USA), he developed his finite element-based model to predict sound propagation in viscous liquid-filled viscoelastic pipeline. This model was also used to investigate the performance of an acoustic space exploration sensor, which is a multi-layer spiral shape structure. Dr Jiang has been involved in offshore construction noise assessments, impacts of industrial underwater noise on marine mammals, and simulation and prediction of underwater sound fields. He has given invited lectures on Underwater Acoustics at the University of Southampton, and together with his colleagues, Dr Jiang has published seven journal papers and one technical report on subjects relating to underwater acoustics since 2010. The most recent of which was published in The Royal Society A.

Dr Jiang is a member of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) in UK and a member of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (IIAV).
